Meet the Artist

My name is Aléja and the work I create as an artist focuses on advocacy and celebrating my African American culture. With an earthy color palette and organic forms, my intention is to depict the realities of our society through a conceptual approach. Figures are often seen in my work to create more apparent connections between the illustration and the viewer. In having the human form in my work, I am acknowledging a real cultural identity that I want others to recognize.

I strive to have enough information in my pieces that allows others to understand my intent while also leaving room for other interpretations. I believe my vocation of creating was made to be shared which is why I create digital renderings of my thoughts and beliefs. Through this medium, I can express myself to larger audiences in an instant. Creating art is a form of using my voice and I want viewers to not just see the work for its artistic qualities, but also listen to what it’s saying.

Agape and Oak: Agape is Greek for God's unconditional love; Oak is rooted in the stability of oak trees. Agape and Oak together are a symbolic and constant reminder of God's unwavering love and strength.
